The "Typography Styles" filter lets you narrow down your sentiment stamp searches for a specific style, mood or look. This is especially helpful for stamps with common words such as "Happy" — you might want a fun, casual look for a kid's birthday card but a more elegant script typeface for a holiday card.
- Serif: Serif is a typography term that refers to the small, decorative "arms" at the ends of letters in fonts such as Times New Roman.
- Sans Serif: Sans serif is a typography term that means a typeface does not have the "arms" ("Sans Serif" literally means "without serifs"). Helvetica is a common sans serif font.
- Script: Fonts that have the look of being written in cursive or calligraphy. Script fonts are almost always tagged as "Sans Serif" as well.
- Typewriter: Also called monotype, these fonts generally have a fixed width for each character. Many typewriter fonts are serif, but not all.
- Handwritten: Fonts that have a handwritten feel. Note that many stamps will be tagged with both "Handwritten" and "Script." However, a handwritten font such as Comic Sans would not have the "Script" tag.
- Brush: Fonts that have a brushed feel. In some cases, a brush font might also be a script, but it doesn't have to be. It may also be listed as "Handwritten," but this is not a requirement.
We also use a series of general terms that are designed to convey the mood or tone of fonts — or what type of project it might work best for:
- Casual: Used for stamps that have a more laid-back, informal feel. This can include handwritten fonts, sans serifs, serifs and even scripts. These might be used for less formal birthday and friendship cards.
- Elegant: Used for stamps that convey a higher-quality, more formal feel. This can be serif, sans serif, handwritten or script. These fonts are generally at home on formal invitations as well cards for weddings, sympathy or meant for recipients where you may have more of a professional or formal relationship with.
- Fun: Used for stamps that have typography that is unique while also being informal, or that convey a specific theme. These are often a good place to look for kid-friendly sentiments, but you can also use the "Kids" category filter on its own or in combination with a "Fun" filter.
- Clean: Used for stamps with clear, easy-to-read typography. This can include both sans-serif and serif fonts, but generally won't include handwritten or script fonts.
- Textured: Used for stamps where the words have a texture or pattern applied to them. It's important to know that some textured stamps are created using other fonts that might fit into another category.
These more general categories do leave a bit more room for interpretation, but we try to convey the general sense of each stamp. Not all of the stamps from the same set will have the same "Typography Style" tag. We tag them only to match the typography in a specific stamp.
